Why Should You Advocate STEM Education?

Many students feel some aversion to school subjects like math and science. They have this preconceived notion that these subjects are either too hard for them to understand or too boring. Because of that belief, they avoid anything related to math and science like the plague.

It is one of the goals of STEM Education to change that mindset. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM Education teaches the four subject areas using more hands-on activities and incorporating real-world problems so that students can gain interest in these traditionally “boring” subjects and have fun learning their principles and applications.

In the recent years, an increasing number of educators, legislators, NGOs, private companies, and government agencies have been campaigning for STEM Education as they embrace the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math in shaping not only our everyday lives but also our world. Here are several reasons why you should also advocate for STEM Education for your children.

There is a shortage of skilled individuals in STEM-related fields.

Because of the advancements in science and technology, more and more companies are looking for a workforce equipped with STEM skills. However, the number of STEM graduates is not enough to meet the increasing demands. As a result, companies are resorting to “importing” foreigners with STEM skills to meet their needs. This difficulty in recruitment that different companies are experiencing can be traced back to the education we give our grade school and high school students. These young minds, especially young women, are not being inspired or educated enough in STEM, so they end up pursuing other careers. By pushing for STEM education, these students will be more exposed to different STEM experiences and opportunities, making them more interested in taking a career path in STEM.

It would prepare our children for the future.

If we are now living in a technologically advanced age, can you just imagine how much more advanced the world will be when our children grow up? By that time, almost all jobs would probably require a solid STEM foundation from employees. In fact, stats from the U.S. Department of Labor and Department of Commerce indicate that STEM-related occupations are growing almost twice as fast as other occupations, with hefty starting wages, especially in the field of engineering. This means that STEM jobs are financially rewarding and that your kids need STEM education to equip them with STEM skills and knowledge for that future.

It can help transform the nation and the world.

A STEM education gives birth to critical thinkers and future innovators who could help create change not only in the country but also across the globe. More STEM-skilled manpower would lead to more innovations and breakthroughs in the field of science and technology, which could help fuel the economy of the country. On a larger scale, STEM professionals are the ones working on finding the answers to the world’s complex problems, like cancer, depleting energy, global warming and hunger. For the country to have a strong STEM arm, then a STEM education is necessary.
