Technology gets a bad rep when it comes to creativity. Gaming, spending time online or even looking at a screen are commonly held up as causes of stunted imagination and lack of collaboration skills.
But what if we told you that the exact opposite was true!
Sure staring mindlessly at anything is hardly a creative activity, but there are many active uses of technology which offer students exciting routes to express their ingenuity and find inspiration.

1. Express yourself!
Traditional pen and paper exercises are usually fairly one dimensional. Answers have to be given in written sentences or workings displayed above a final answer. With edtech, these traditional tasks can take on a whole new life. Suddenly students have the ability to express their ideas and thoughts in a number of easily understandable and creative ways.
For example in close reading exercises done using the Kami app, students can choose to type their answers (in a traditional fashion) or they can break out of the mold and provide an attached video annotation, screen capture or record their thoughts in a voice comment. This gives students who are more auditory or visual learners the chance to communicate in a way that makes the most sense to them.
Providing students with more options for articulating their knowledge using technology can lead to a positive explosion of creative activities. For example, giving students the option to display their knowledge in a range of ways could lead to the production of colorful infographics, sophisticated animated videos or thoughtful speeches, alongside traditional inputs like tests or essays.
Tech provides classrooms with the freedom to bring creativity into everyday activities. It’s quick, accessible and affordable but far from limiting!
2. Information at our fingertips
Inspiration needs knowledge to feed it – which is fantastic news for education!
Bringing technology in classrooms means that accurate information on all manner of subjects is literally at your students’ fingertips. No longer limited by the realms of textbooks or outdated slides, students can dive into projects fresh and follow exciting research pathways to answer questions and interests they are passionate about.
Of course, this sort of free-range approach to information comes with the caveat of safe online users, who understand how to use the internet responsibly and keep themselves and their peers safe. But with some good schooling in digital citizenship, there is nothing to stop your class enjoying the happy result of truely worldwide knowledge and using this to discover their own interests.

3. Flexibility creates vision
When you’re teaching from a whiteboard with textbooks and paper, it’s easiest to arrange everyone into rows of desks. It makes sense right? This way everyone has a place to write and can have a good view of the front. But this form of classroom design limits a lot of other creative possibilities.
Confining everyone to desks makes true collaborative work tricky, limits self-led learning and forces everyone to sit and work in a uniform fashion.
With technology, the days of teaching trapped behind a desk or in front of a whiteboard are long gone. This gives both students and teachers the freedom to move around and utilize the whole classroom space to best suit their needs. So called flexible classrooms can have spaces for collaborative work, quiet corners for concentrated learning, sitting areas, standing desks and just about anything else that helps students to learn better. And, you’ve guessed it, this sort of flexibility contributes to creating a more creative setting where ideas and inspiration can really take hold.
But how exactly does teaching work in this setting?

5. Learning via games
Games can be a dirty word amongst parents and teachers. But once you move past the initial aversion, there is a lot of creativity that is both embraced and encouraged within gaming. At their core games involve complex problem solving, learning from experience and all from within an ingenious and beautifully designed digital world.
Not only do games provide a good outlet for creativity (not to mention future career possibilities within creative industries) they can be a great way to motivate learning. Gamification is already a popular method of learning new skills in the business world, with the potential for positive results in education. Embracing the game mindset can turn otherwise dry material into competitive fun, where students are encouraged to creatively solve problems and find solutions. Math games like Prodigy, quiz apps like Quizlet or keyboard skill apps like Typingclub actively engage these properties.
6. We need to be creative with technology
Humans are creative. It’s how we survive and thrive in the world in which we live. For better or worse, technology is now a fundamental part of our journey – so it is crucial that we learn how to master it without shedding our creativity.
Embracing the exciting world of tech and showing young people how to utilize it for creative purposes, is essential to our future – and it will also make it a lot more fun!
