When the transition to remote learning accelerated the demand for 21st-century digital education solutions, Kami delivered.
We have assisted schools all over the world, providing resources to educators transitioning to online teaching, all while maintaining and enhancing our award-winning online application. The global situation was rapidly changing, and with all hands on deck, we adapted and grew every day. Ultimately, the increased demand for well-proven digital engagement tools such as Kami propelled our community to grow to ten million users who have now generated over a billion annotations.
Recognizing that we were in a position to help in a time of crisis by eliminating barriers to adoption, Kami offered a free transitional upgrade to any school forced to close due to the pandemic. Amid the challenge, the Kami team has worked tirelessly in recent months to scale our systems, processes, and organization to serve the millions of additional educators and students around the world who have flocked to Kami for their remote learning needs.
Remarkably, despite continuing to offer free short-term upgrades through April, orders for annual subscriptions first revived and then surged, delivering the much-needed revenue to finance continued growth.
For several years, our users adopted Kami when transitioning classrooms to paperless activities. Being trusted with hundreds of millions of documents serves as a testament to our vision: to reimagine the digital learning environment by providing tools that unlock potential, ignite creativity, and nurture collaboration.
What is our secret sauce? Our team
At Kami, we value celebrating our team members’ successes at any scale and empowering each other during challenging times. We have a tight-knit, passionate team, and now more than ever, we as co-founders wanted to recognize how each team member’s hard work and contributions can add up to something incredible.
To all the teachers, students, and individuals who have backed Kami’s vision, we want to say: Thank you! Without your support over the past seven years, we wouldn’t have been able to provide a universally accessible learning solution that can help shape the next generation’s bright minds.
Love what we do? Come join our team!
In addition to growing our user base, our team, headquartered in New Zealand, has also grown by 50% in recent weeks, and we are still growing! If you share the same passion and want to apply your skills to make a difference in the new normal of education, email your CV to email@example.com
What is Kami?
Kami is a leading and trusted digital classroom solution. It enables teachers and students to use any existing document as their canvas—write, draw, type, annotate, comment, augment, enhance, illustrate, embed audio or video, and otherwise bring it to life—all within the browser. Work alone or collaboratively, in real-time or asynchronously.
Its intuitive design and collaborative features are specifically designed to improve classroom engagement and interaction—all while making the task of providing and completing classroom assignments effortless. With Kami as the digital pen and paper, students can learn, create, and collaborate together, or on their own.
“In my math class, I felt like the traditional method of taking notes (writing on the board, then having students copy on a sheet of paper) was increasingly ineffective. Students worked at different paces, and I would have to be in front of the room the entire time waiting for groups to finish while others became restless. Using Kami, I am able to more effectively facilitate notes and discussion, making the experience much more interactive for students.”
— Brendan Boylan, math and technology teacher at Roseland University Prep
“In our district, we have difficulty with getting our dyslexic students to write with complexity and academic language. Kami is helping our students with learning differences gain confidence in using more complex language because the digital format is a comfortable medium for them, and they can use tools to help them get their ideas on paper. The independence they feel to choose their own colors to highlight and annotate makes a big difference in owning their work. They can give their best effort at a time that works better for them in case it’s too distracting in the classroom. Now students can learn anytime and anywhere!”
— Fern Johnson, Instructional Technology Coach at Plano Independent School District
